Key points
1Physical health exists for faithfulness, not fitness or vanity
Pastor Bill traces his own journey from being a sickly asthmatic kid to chasing sports and appearance goals, noting none of those goals were bad but none were the point either. The real purpose of caring for the body is to be a faithful steward, able to live out God's calling, not simply to add years to life.
A story from life
Pastor's own childhood asthma and his father's decision to get him running and swimming rather than avoiding activity
2Elijah's story shows how spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health are all tangled together
After his victory over the prophets of Baal, Elijah receives one threatening note from Jezebel and completely unravels, fleeing into the wilderness and praying to die under a broom tree. Pastor Bill points out that fear, exhaustion, and hopelessness were all present at once, and that health problems in one area always bleed into the others.
3God's first move toward a broken-down Elijah was to have him eat and sleep
An angel wakes Elijah twice to feed him and lets him sleep before any conversation happens, showing that God addresses the physical need first because Elijah couldn't face the journey ahead otherwise. Pastor Bill's father's blunt army advice — eat, sleep, and take care of yourself or you can't fight — reinforces the same point.
4Three unfaithful patterns: neglecting, rejecting, or perfecting the body
Some neglect their bodies out of busyness or overwork, like Elijah or the preacher's own mother, who died younger than she should have from never resting. Others reject their bodies through body dysmorphia, which can push toward eating disorders or steroid abuse, while others chase perfection and end up worshiping their own fitness instead of serving God with it.
It's not how many years you have in your life. It's how much of the life you have in your years

5Faithfulness looks like self-control, movement, rest, and peace
Working through Ephesians 5:17-18 and 1 Corinthians 6:12-13, Pastor Bill shows that anything controlling us competes with the Holy Spirit and becomes a false coping mechanism. From there he walks through 1 Timothy 4:8-9 on training for godliness, practical movement tips like parking farther away, Psalm 127:2 on rest, and Proverbs 14:30 on peace as the heart's connection to a healthy body.
become a slave to that. And you think that, well, the church is making me do all so I gotta become slave to it. No. Doing what God said is what gives us freedom.
Chasing the cravings enslaves you and kills you
A story from life
Pastor's Monday after a heavy Easter weekend — checking his watch at night and finding only 827 steps taken all day
6God met Elijah in a gentle whisper, not the wind, earthquake, or fire
After displaying dramatic power, God isn't found in any of it — He speaks in a still, small voice, showing Elijah he'd been listening for the wrong kind of encounter with God. Pastor Bill asks whether we are so busy chasing dramatic answers or fixing our circumstances that we miss God's quiet presence.
7God sends Elijah back the way he came, reminding him he was never alone
God doesn't argue with Elijah's excuses but simply tells him to return to his calling, promising that whatever isn't good yet isn't the end. Pastor Bill ties this to the Lord's Supper and the cross, showing that wholeness is found only in Jesus, who was broken so we could be made whole.
if it's not good, Elijah, it's not the end
We are whole because Jesus was wholly broken
He was broken so we can be whole again
Application
Pastor Bill frames the charge as pursuing wholeness in Christ, because physical health apart from Him is just wasted strength.
Respect your body instead of neglecting, rejecting, or perfecting it
Notice which unhealthy pattern you lean toward — ignoring your body, being at war with how it looks, or idolizing how it performs — and steward it instead of worshiping or dismissing it.
Practice self-control over false coping mechanisms
Ask whether food, alcohol, screens, or other comforts are fueling your calling or just feeding your cravings, and let anything that controls you be handed back to the Holy Spirit.
Build simple movement into your day
You don't need a gym membership — park farther away, walk after meals, and treat your body's need to move as part of training for godliness, not competition.
Get real rest instead of scrolling
Go to bed earlier rather than staying up on a screen, and consider replacing that time with reading Scripture so both sleep and time in God's presence increase.
Go back the way you came
If you're running from your calling or from God like Elijah did, listen for His gentle whisper rather than waiting for dramatic proof, and return to trusting and obeying Him with your whole self, including your body.
Take it into your week
