Key points
1We were never meant to go on the journey alone — community is mission critical, not optional.
Pastor Bill uses the picture of giant redwood trees that survive storms not through deep roots but by intertwining their roots with the trees around them. He applies this to the church: we are meant to be linked together, not standing solitary, because that is how we withstand the storms of life.
2Standing alone leaves us exposed to a real spiritual enemy; united community destroys the enemy's plans.
Working through Philippians 1:27, Pastor Bill shows Paul telling the Philippian church to stand together with one spirit and purpose, fighting together for the faith. He argues the enemy is fine with people sitting in rows on a private spiritual quest, because uniting in real community is what actually defeats him.
we are not rock point when we just sit in rows. We are rock point when we sit in circles
Biblical community is not an optional thing that if my life gets less scheduled, less busy, I can do. It is a life and death critical matter
3We settle for false community — images and individualism — instead of real, physically present relationship.
He traces how technology has changed friendship: from expensive long-distance calls that let friendships fade, to social media and texting that let us feel connected to people who are not truly present. He tells the story of a blogger who received $100,000 from strangers who called her their friend though they'd never met her, and notes how people now skip parts of classical concerts, picking and choosing rather than staying present for the whole experience.
4Biblical community requires four elements: being known, accepted, supported, and developed.
Reading Galatians 6:1-2, Pastor Bill draws out four marks of real community. He tells his own embarrassing story of lying to a young boy at a batting cage rather than admit he'd broken a rule, showing how fear of being truly known leads us to hide in plain sight rather than receive help.
the struggle we have is the one place we act the fakest is the place we should be the realest
A story from life
Pastor Bill pretends to be a Major League Baseball player at a batting cage to avoid wearing a helmet, leading to an escalating deception with a young fan and his mother
5We need to be accepted and supported, not just known — with people who will engage rather than reject us.
He explains that being known must be followed by real acceptance, a place to be honest about struggles without being run off like a rejected outsider, and then by tangible support in carrying burdens, whether spiritual, physical, or emotional.
A story from life
Pastor Bill's youngest daughter, a self-described non-people-person, attends a pool party she dreads because she knows she needs community

6We also need to be developed — challenged toward growth, not just comforted.
He plays a testimony video of a self-described hermit who reluctantly joined a small group and found she needed people more than she realized. He explains a pastor's job is to equip the saints, not just perform ministry, and community is where believers push each other toward Jesus rather than settling for comfortable fellowship.
if you think you're too important to help someone, you're only fooling yourself. You're not that important
7We need the whole cookie — all four elements together — because picking and choosing produces false, unstable community.
Using the illustration of kids and even a zoo monkey eating only the creamy center of an Oreo and discarding or throwing back the cookie part, Pastor Bill says people often want acceptance and support without being known or developed. He argues the whole cookie makes us vulnerable, and vulnerability is what makes us unstoppable, quoting Galatians 6:3 that thinking we're too important to help others is only fooling ourselves.
When we get the whole cookie, we become vulnerable, which allows us to become unstoppable
A story from life
Pastor Mark Collins visits the World Wildlife Zoo and watches a monkey lick the cream from Oreos and throw the cookie parts at the trainer
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to get the whole cookie — don't just want the creamy middle of community, take all four pieces: being known, accepted, supported, and developed.
Get into a circle, not just a row
If you are not in a small group or biblical community, fill out a group card and get connected — attending a service alone is not the same as living the life God intended.
Let yourself be truly known
Stop hiding in plain sight like the Bill Josephs story; be honest about your struggles with your group instead of wearing a church game face.
Evaluate your current group against all four marks
If you're already in community, this week reflect and talk with your group about how you're doing at being known, accepted, supported, and developed, and be honest about where you're weak.
Show up for others even when you don't feel like it
Recognize that even if you don't feel the need for community, someone else needs you to know, accept, support, and develop them — don't skip out because it's inconvenient.
Take it into your week
