Big Idea

A good friend steers you away from temptation, not toward it, and you need people in your life you've given permission to speak that kind of wisdom into you.

Even the strongest believers can move from a spiritual high straight into a temptation to sin, but God places friends in our lives who, with humility, can pull us back before we do damage we can't undo. Rock Point exists to help people find that kind of biblical community, because we were never meant to walk through hard times, or the pull of temptation, alone.

Key points

1
1Friendships come in circles, and not every circle should have the same access to your life.
Pastor Tim walks through the layers of friendship from casual Facebook acquaintances down to the small group who has truly earned the right to speak into your life. He uses his own story of a bad idea to reinvent himself as a lounge singer to show how an outer-circle friend might cheer on a terrible plan just to watch it fail, while a true friend would tell you the truth because they have your best interest at heart.
2
2A good friend is someone who steers you away from temptation, not toward it.
This becomes the measuring stick for the whole message: the right voice in your life is the one that pulls you back from doing something destructive, not the one that cheers you into it.
3
3David could move from a spiritual mountaintop to the edge of a massacre in a single day.
Pastor Tim retells 1 Samuel 24, where David refuses to kill the vulnerable, sleeping Saul out of reverence for God's anointing, then immediately walks into 1 Samuel 25, where Nabal insults him after refusing to feed his men. David's response is to strap on his sword and march four hundred men toward the village, ready to kill everyone, proving that even a man after God's own heart can tip from obedience into vengeance overnight.
4
4Abigail models how to speak wisdom into someone: with humility, not superiority.
Rather than lecturing David or asserting she's right, Abigail bows before him, brings provision, and appeals to who God has called him to be, asking him not to let vengeance become a blemish on his record. Pastor Tim contrasts this with believers who grab the bullhorn to tell people they're wrong instead of pointing them toward righteousness in love.
5
5One voice of wisdom at the right moment can change the trajectory of many lives, not just one.
David accepts Abigail's appeal and turns back, sparing his own conscience and every man in Nabal's village. Pastor Tim connects this to his own story of a mentor named Jay Watson, who pulled him back from confronting his lead pastor in anger after a wild youth ministry stunt involving snakes went wrong, a moment of wisdom that Pastor Tim says saved his job and shaped the rest of his ministry.
6
6You were never meant to face temptation and hardship alone; that's what biblical community and, ultimately, Jesus are for.
Pastor Tim shares that in the middle of his son's serious health crisis, a friend named Sean called just to pray for him for five minutes, reminding him that friends can be family even without blood ties. He closes by pointing to Jesus as the ultimate friend who sticks closer than a brother and who has never let him down through every hard season.

Application

Pastor Tim asks people to look at their circle of friends and decide who has earned the right to speak into their life.

Evaluate who is speaking into your life
Take stock of your circles of friends and be honest about who is actually steering you toward wisdom versus who is just cheering you toward a train wreck.
Say thank you to your 'Jay'
Reach out this week to the person who once pulled you back from temptation and simply thank them for pouring into you.
Reach out to someone waiting on your voice
Set up coffee or make a phone call to a friend on the edge of a bad decision and speak wisdom to them with humility, the way Abigail did for David.
Get into a small group
If you don't have this kind of community yet, take the step Brandon mentioned, fill out the card, and go to Group Link to start building real relationships at Rock Point.
Let Jesus be the friend who steers you
Rest in Jesus as the friend who sticks closer than a brother and trust Him to lead you away from temptation and toward Him.

Day 1

There is a kind of friendship the book of Proverbs describes that most of us quietly long for but rarely name out loud — a friend who loves at all times, not just the easy ones, and who shows up with particular steadiness when things get hard. Pastor Tim opened the sermon by anchoring the whole story in this verse, and it is worth sitting here before we move anywhere else. Not every relationship in our lives carries this kind of weight. Some friendships are casual, seasonal, and genuinely good without being that. But there are a trusted few — sometimes just one or two people — who love us enough to stay in the room when we are at our worst, and whose voices carry a different kind of authority because of it. That is not a small thing. It is actually a rare and serious gift. The question this verse raises is not whether we are likable or socially active. It is whether we have cultivated the kind of friendships where love is not conditional on our performance. And equally — whether we are that kind of friend for someone else. Real friendship, the Proverbs kind, requires us to show up in adversity, not just celebration. That starts with knowing who those people are in your life and choosing, intentionally, to let them in.

For reflection

Who in your life loves you in a way that holds steady even in hard seasons — and when did you last let that person actually see what is going on with you?

Pray

Pray for gratitude and honest awareness about the friendships God has already placed in your life.

Day 2

David is fresh off one of the most remarkable seasons of his life — a man after God's own heart, anointed king, protected by God through impossible odds. And yet within the span of a single conversation with Nabal's servants, he is strapping on a sword and riding toward a massacre. Four hundred men. An entire household. Dead, because a wealthy fool refused to show hospitality. Pastor Tim made a point here that is worth taking seriously: nobody is so spiritually mature, so established in their walk with God, that they are beyond a catastrophic decision made in a moment of rage or wounded pride. David's track record was genuinely impressive. It did not protect him here. What we see in these verses is how quickly our hearts can shift when someone wounds our ego or refuses to acknowledge what we feel we are owed. The speed of David's reaction is almost jarring. One report, one offense, and he is already moving. This is not a character flaw unique to David — it is a deeply human one. And it is precisely why the quality of the voices around us matters so much. When we are in motion toward something we will regret, we need someone close enough to see it and brave enough to say something.

For reflection

Can you think of a time when you moved quickly toward a decision out of anger or wounded pride — and what, or who, stopped you?

Pray

Pray for honest self-awareness about the areas of your life where anger or pride can move faster than wisdom.

Day 3

Before we ever hear Abigail speak a word to David, we see her move. She does not call a meeting. She does not wait for permission. She loads up donkeys with bread, wine, grain, and fruit, and she rides out to intercept a man who is coming with four hundred armed soldiers. The practical, costly act of provision comes before the wise words. This is worth noticing. Abigail's wisdom was not just verbal — it was embodied. She gave something of herself, her resources, her time, her safety, before she ever opened her mouth. Real friendship that speaks truth into someone's life is almost never just a well-timed conversation. It is built on a foundation of consistent, costly presence. The people who earn the right to redirect us have usually already shown up for us in the ordinary, unglamorous ways — the meal when we were too tired to cook, the phone call that asked nothing, the showing up when it was inconvenient. If you want to be the kind of friend whose words carry weight, it begins long before the moment of crisis. It begins in the small, quiet investments of everyday life that say, without words: I am for you, not just available to you.

For reflection

What does it look like, practically, for you to invest in a friendship before a moment of crisis requires it?

Pray

Pray for a willingness to show up for the people around you in quiet, practical ways — not just in big moments.

Day 4

Abigail's speech to David is one of the most carefully constructed pieces of wisdom in all of the Old Testament. She falls at his feet. She takes on blame she did not earn. She does not lecture David, does not moralize at him, does not remind him of his own failures or hold his past decisions over him. Instead, she essentially says: here is who God has called you to be, and here is what it will cost you to become the kind of man who slaughters a household over an insult. She appeals not to David's guilt but to his calling. Pastor Tim held this up as the model for how we speak wisdom into people we love — not with self-righteousness, not with a need to be right, but with genuine humility and a clear eye toward the other person's best interest. This is harder than it sounds. When someone we care about is heading toward a decision we know will hurt them, our first instinct is often to make sure they know we were right. Abigail had no such instinct. Her only goal was David's well-being and God's glory. That kind of other-centered wisdom is rare — and it is something we can actually cultivate if we are willing to let God work on our own pride first.

For reflection

When you feel the urge to speak a hard truth into someone's life, what is your honest motivation — their good, or being right?

Pray

Pray for humility and genuine other-centeredness the next time you feel called to speak a difficult truth to someone you care about.

Day 5

David's response to Abigail might be the quietest miracle in the whole story. He stops. He listens. He blesses God and blesses her, and he turns his four hundred men around and goes home. No bloodshed. No massacre. No stain on his hands that he would carry into his kingship. One woman, one honest and humble conversation, changed the trajectory of an entire household — including David's own future. Pastor Tim made the point that a single moment of wisdom spoken into someone's life can ripple outward in ways neither person will fully see. The people whose lives were spared that day did not know why. David's future as king was protected in a way he could not have predicted. This is the nature of wise friendship — the fruit of it is often invisible in the moment and only understood looking back. It is also an invitation not to underestimate the conversations God is asking you to have. You may feel small, or unsure, or like you have no standing to say anything. Abigail had no formal authority over David. She was not his priest or his prophet. She was a woman with provision, humility, and genuine care — and that was enough. Do not let the size of the moment fool you into silence.

For reflection

Is there someone in your life right now who needs a wise, gentle word from you — and what is holding you back from offering it?

Pray

Pray for courage to have a conversation you have been avoiding, and for wisdom about how and when to have it.

Day 6

This verse is direct enough that it almost needs no commentary: walk with the wise and become wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm. The sermon connected this to the practical reality of biblical community — small groups, church relationships, the kind of consistent, life-on-life connection that does not happen by accident. Pastor Tim was clear that this kind of community has to be built intentionally. It does not just appear. It requires showing up, which sometimes feels awkward at first, and choosing over time to let people in past the level of surface conversation. The reason this matters is simple: the people we spend time with shape us, whether we intend for them to or not. Their values, their habits, their relationship with fear and faith and money and honesty — all of it bleeds into us over time. This is not an argument for being cold toward people who do not share your faith. It is an honest recognition that the inner circle — the voices you give real access to your real life — will determine a great deal about the direction you walk. If you do not have that kind of community right now, that is not a verdict on your character. It is simply a gap worth closing, and the closing of it begins with one concrete step.

For reflection

What is one honest reason you have stayed at the surface level in your current friendships — and what would it take to go one level deeper?

Pray

Pray for the courage to take one specific step this week toward building or deepening a real community — a small group, a coffee, a phone call.

Day 7

Spend a few minutes today reading the whole story from beginning to end — Nabal's foolishness, David's rage, Abigail's courage, and the quiet resolution that followed. As you do, hold in mind everything the week has surfaced: the friendships that have weight, the moments where the right voice changed your direction, the places where you are still flying solo when you do not have to be. Pastor Tim closed the sermon by pointing to Jesus as the friend who underlies all of it. Every human friendship that has ever pulled you back from a cliff, spoken honest truth in a hard moment, or simply stayed when it would have been easier to leave — every one of those is a shadow of something Jesus offers perfectly and permanently. He is not just the model for this kind of friendship. He is the source of it. The Abigail in your story — whoever that person is — learned something about love from somewhere. The community that grounds you reflects, however imperfectly, a God who calls us friends and means it. You are not meant to do this alone, and you do not have to. The invitation this week has been the same throughout: let the right voices in, be that voice for others, and let Jesus — the friend who sticks closer than a brother — lead the way.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what one thing do you want to actually do differently — about who you let in, how you show up for others, or the community you are building?

Pray

Pray for the will to follow through on whatever specific step came into focus this week — and for gratitude for Jesus, the friend who never leaves.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Think about a time someone said exactly the right thing at exactly the right moment — not to lecture you, but to help you see clearly. This message looks at what made that kind of voice possible, and why it matters more than we might realize.

Discussion questions

1
Proverbs 17:17 says, 'A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.' Pastor Tim drew a distinction between friendships in general and the trusted few who actually have permission to speak wisdom into our lives. What do you think separates those two kinds of relationships?
2
In 1 Samuel 25, David — a man with a real track record with God — is on the verge of a catastrophic act of vengeance after one bad interaction with Nabal. What does that swing tell us about the kind of support even spiritually mature people need around them?
3
When Abigail approaches David in 1 Samuel 25:23–31, she doesn't lecture him or try to win an argument — she comes with humility and speaks to what's actually at stake for him. What is it about her approach that makes her words land rather than push David further away?
4
After David hears Abigail out, he says in 1 Samuel 25:32–34 that she kept him from doing something he would have deeply regretted — and he recognizes God's hand in sending her. How might one honest, well-timed conversation ripple outward beyond just the two people involved?
5
Proverbs 13:20 says that walking with the wise makes you wiser. Pastor Tim connected that to the purpose of biblical community — small groups and church relationships as the environment where those voices find us. What makes that kind of community hard to build, and what might make it more possible?
6
Pastor Tim closed by pointing to Jesus as the ultimate friend — the one every human friendship only partially reflects — who redirects us from temptation and frees us from sin. How does grounding friendship in what Jesus offers change the way we think about both receiving wisdom and giving it?

Pray together

Gratitude for friends who speak truth with humility, and courage to both seek and be that kind of presence for the people around us
