Key points
1Romans 1 reads like a court case, and the summary charge is that God's controlled, righteous anger is already being poured out against suppressed truth.
Pastor Bill explains that the Greek word for God's anger in verse 18 isn't the explosive human kind (thermos) but a judge's controlled, present-tense sentence. He notes it's in the present tense, meaning judgment is already underway now, not only at a final judgment to come.

2Charge one is godlessness — living as if God doesn't exist, even while believing He does.
Using the parable of the prodigal son as a parallel, Pastor Bill shows that wanting the inheritance without the father was really wanting to live as if the father were gone. He walks through verses 19-23: creation makes God obvious, so we're without excuse, but we suppress the truth, reject God outright, and then inevitably replace Him with idols — because humans are built to worship something.
3Idolatry works like a vending machine — we think we're being righteous, but we're really just trying to stay in control.
He describes idolatry (and even legalism) as giving something to get what we want, which means we're really the one in charge, not God. When the 'machine' doesn't deliver, we get angry, proving the object of our worship was never really God.
We are supposed to speak the truth in love. What's the emphasis on that? What's the action word in that? Truth

4Charge two is wickedness — once we live like God doesn't exist, we start living like we are God, making our own rules.
Pastor Bill unpacks verse 24's 'God abandoned them,' explaining the Greek is active, not passive — like the prodigal's father actively releasing him into the far country. He traces the descent from immoral passions to indecent perversions, using Romans' example of homosexuality in the Roman culture (noting 14 of the first 15 Caesars practiced it) to show how sin distorts God's created order for sex, marriage, and identity.
5The current judgment for sin is more sin — culture and individuals get handed over to sink deeper, not because God is absent but because He's already let go.
He argues this explains why our culture keeps sliding further than even decadent Rome, redefining marriage rather than merely dabbling in sin as Rome did. He warns that making sexuality or gender one's identity is a lie from the enemy that leads away from life, not toward it.

A story from life
Pastor Bill's wife gets a food-sensitivity test; he gets one too but admits he probably won't follow through, drawing a parallel to fear of trusting God through the pain of change
6The list of sins in verses 28-32 includes things most people in the room do — greed, envy, gossip, deception — so no one gets to stand outside the charge.
Pastor Bill applies this directly, noting that about 60% of people who call this church home don't give, which he calls greed, and needles the congregation about gossip and Facebook quarreling. He insists the message isn't just about hot-button issues like gender or sexuality — everyone is equally guilty.

7The good news of Romans 1:16-17 is that real joy and righteousness come only through faith in Christ, which is the whole reason for Christmas.
He closes by returning to verses 16-17, showing that the gospel is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, and that living righteously by faith is where joy is actually found. He ties this back to the sermon series theme that Christmas is about needing a Savior, not merely enjoying a season.
There is a joy that is found only in Jesus that you're trying to find in whatever it is you're trying to find it in
You will never understand how awesome the good news is if you do not understand how bad the news was

Application
Pastor Bill frames the charge as facing whether we believe Jesus, not just believe in Him — and admitting what we're each sipping on.
Stop living like God doesn't exist
Examine whether you believe God is real but still make daily decisions as though He isn't watching or involved — repressing, rejecting, or quietly replacing Him with something else.
Quit treating God like a vending machine
Notice if your obedience is really about controlling outcomes — giving to get what you want — rather than genuinely submitting to God as God.
Don't tie your identity to sexuality or gender
If you're struggling here, recognize the lie that this must define you or that happiness is impossible without it; bring it honestly to God instead of assuming there's no hope.
Stop judging while sipping the same sin
Look honestly at greed, envy, gossip, deception, and quarreling in your own life instead of only condemning the sins that feel 'ickier,' like gender or sexuality issues.
Trust Christ fully rather than holding back
Like going 'all in' rather than just sipping, actually believe and follow Jesus instead of hedging, because real joy is found only on the other side of trusting Him.
Take it into your week
