Big Idea

God is faithful, so don't be fearful — Israel's story proves that our salvation, and our worship, are for us but never about us.

Pastor Bill shows from Romans 11 that Israel's setback is not proof God breaks His promises but the greatest proof He keeps them — a remnant remains, and one day Israel will be grafted back in. Because God is faithful, we don't have to let fear run our lives; instead we turn what we know about Him into adoration, remembering everything is for us but it isn't about us.

Key points

1
1Israel isn't off the team, they're benched — and only partly, and only for now
Pastor Bill opens Romans 11 by noting Paul answers a question from Gentile believers: if nothing separates us from God's love, what about Israel? He walks through Paul's answer that Israel's stumbling isn't the end of God's promise, using his own boyhood benching for bad attitude on a baseball team as the picture — being sidelined isn't the same as being cut from the team.
2
2There is always a remnant, and it's only temporary
He reads Romans 11:1-10, pointing to Paul himself and to Elijah's 7,000 who never bowed to Baal as proof God always preserves a faithful remnant within Israel, even when it looks like all is lost. He says Israel's hardening will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes in.
3
3Don't brag — you're a branch grafted in, not the root
Working through the olive tree image, Pastor Bill warns the Gentile church not to repeat Israel's mistake of pride, thinking salvation is about them. Branches were broken off so wild branches could be grafted in, but God is able to graft the original branches back in when they turn to Christ.
4
4Fearful means letting fear make your decisions instead of trusting God's faithfulness
He clarifies that fearing God rightly and having fears are not the same as being fearful — being fearful means fear, not faith, drives your choices. He contrasts this with the fear of the Lord, which trusts God's character even when a step feels scary.
5
5The mystery of Israel's future salvation is answered in Revelation, and it's good news, not a horror movie
Pastor Bill connects Paul's mystery of 'all Israel will be saved' to the 144,000 sealed Jewish evangelists and the end-time turning of Israel to Christ in Revelation. He argues Christians misread Revelation as a horror movie and wrongly insert America into Israel's covenant story, when the book is actually meant to encourage believers that we win.
6
6Turn information into adoration through the closing worship poem of Romans 11
He highlights how Paul shifts from dense theology into a poetic doxology, and argues the missing connector between knowing truth and living transformed is worship. He unpacks verse 36 as showing God is the source, sustainer, and significance of all things.
7
7Worship, including singing and communion, is for us but never about us
Using his father's military-style running cadences as a picture of staying in step together, Pastor Bill argues that refusing to sing or engage in worship is really a sign of making faith about yourself. He ties this to communion, explaining Jesus' body and blood were given for us, but the point is always Him.

That is pretty much what Paul is trying to say about Israel in Romans chapter 11

Application

Pastor Bill's charge is that everything God has done is for us, but none of it is about us — so stop letting fear decide and start turning what you know into adoration.

Stop letting fear make your decisions
Whether it's news from Ukraine or your own life, don't let fear direct your choices — trust God's faithfulness even when a step feels scary, the way godly fear of the Lord does.
Don't brag or make faith about yourself
Like Israel and like Gentile believers grafted in, remember you're a branch, not the root — don't get cocky or think God's blessing depends on your goodness.
Turn information into adoration
Don't stop at knowing facts about God; let what you know move you to worship, the connecting step between information and real transformation.
Sing and engage in worship together
If you're a Christian who won't sing, examine whether you've made worship about your preferences instead of about Him; run in cadence with the church rather than going it alone.
Take communion as a reflective reset
Use communion this week to remember Christ's body and blood were given for you, repent of fear and disobedience, and turn your focus back to Him.

Scripture in this message

From the transcript
“as we look at chapter 11 of Romans and talk about what this means, I'm reminded of a story that happened when I was playing baseball back when I was younger”
From the transcript
“we've been looking through nine through 11 the last few weeks. We've been kinda going fast because chapter eight is like this crescendo moment in Romans”
From the transcript
“chapter eight is like this crescendo moment in Romans when he's trying to explain the gospel and saying here's how we're justified”
From the transcript
“Let's listen to God's word. Let it speak to us. Chapter 11. Not bankruptcy. Romans chapter 11. When you feel bankrupt, read Romans chapter 11”
From the transcript
“I asked then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not. I myself an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin”
From the transcript
“No, God has not rejected his own people whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you realize what scriptures say about this? Elijah, prophet, complained to God about the people of Israel”
From the transcript
“it is the same today. For a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God's grace, his undeserved kindness in choosing them. And since it is through God's kindness, then it is not by their good works”
Paraphrase of the transcript
Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. Why? Because they're trying to do it on their own. A few have, the ones God has chosen, but the hearts of the rest were hardened.
From the transcript
“did God's people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not. They were disobedient so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves”
From the transcript
“Now if the Gentiles were enriched because of God's people of Israel turned down God's offer of salvation, they wouldn't put their faith in Christ. Think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it”
Paraphrase of the transcript
I am saying all this especially for you Gentiles. God has appointed me as the apostle to the Gentiles. I stress this, for I want somehow to make the people of Israel jealous of what you gentiles have so I might save something.
From the transcript
“For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will even be more wonderful. It'll be life for those who are dead”
From the transcript
“some of these branches from Abraham's tree, some of the people of Israel have been broken off. And you Gentiles who were branches from a wild olive tree have been grafted in. You were assigned to the team”
From the transcript
“So don't think as highly of yourself, but fear what could happen. For God did not spare the original branches, he won't spare you either”
From the transcript
“I want you to understand this mystery. I'll explain the mystery in a minute. Dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud of yourselves. Some of the people of Israel have hard hearts, but this will last only until the full number of Gentiles comes to Christ”
From the transcript
“And so all of Israel will be saved, as the scriptures say. What's this all of Israel? So now does that mean everyone”
From the transcript
“the one who rescues will come from Jerusalem and he will turn Israel away from ungodliness. And this is my covenant with them and I will take their sins away”
From the transcript
“Many of the people of Israel are now enemies of the good news, and this benefits you Gentiles. Yet they're still the people he loves because he chose their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. For God's gifts and call can never be withdrawn”
From the transcript
“And then chapter 12 begins what we call the transformation. It's when he gets to the end he goes, okay, if this is all true, how does this work out? How do we live as the church”
From the transcript
“For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever, amen”
From the transcript
“Oh, how great are God's riches and wisdom and knowledge. How impossible it is is it for us to understand his decisions and his ways”

7-day devotional

Day 1

One of the quietest fears a person can carry is the fear that God has given up — on the world, on a situation, or maybe even on you. In Romans 11, Paul faces that fear head-on. His own people, Israel, had stumbled badly. From the outside it looked like God had walked away. Paul's answer is direct: 'God has not rejected His people.' He points to himself as evidence. He points to Elijah, a prophet so discouraged he thought he was the last faithful person alive — and God corrected him gently: I have kept seven thousand for Myself. There is always a remnant. That word remnant might sound small, but it is actually one of the most stabilizing truths in Scripture. It means God's purposes never go dark. Even in the hardest season, even when the visible church looks thin and the news sounds grim, God is quietly preserving what He has promised to preserve. Pastor Bill drew our attention here not to give us a history lesson but to give us a foundation. If God has never once abandoned His purposes for Israel across thousands of years of wilderness and war and exile, then the circumstances that frighten you right now are not evidence that He has forgotten you. The remnant principle is a mercy: faithfulness doesn't require the majority. It only requires God.

For reflection

Where in your life does it feel like God's purposes might have gone quiet — and how does the reality of a preserved remnant speak to that place?

Pray

Pray for eyes to see where God is quietly at work even when His faithfulness is not yet visible to you.

Day 2

Israel stumbled — but Paul is quick to ask the obvious follow-up: did they fall beyond recovery? His answer is no. In fact, Paul makes a move that is almost surprising: he says Israel's stumble became a doorway. Because the message of grace went out to the Gentiles — the nations — salvation spread further than it might have otherwise. Then Paul reaches for a vivid image: an olive tree. The cultivated branches represent Israel; wild branches — Gentiles — are grafted in. It's an unusual kind of horticulture in the real world, but as a picture of grace it's breathtaking. You are not the natural branch. You did not earn your place at the root. You were brought in. Pastor Bill's point is not to make anyone feel like an outsider but to do the opposite — to make clear that your inclusion was a deliberate act of grace, not an accident of history or heritage. The root holds you; you do not hold the root. That shift in perspective matters enormously for how we carry ourselves before God and before other people. Entitlement evaporates when you remember you were grafted. Gratitude grows. And when we understand that our place at the table came through God's generosity rather than our résumé, it becomes much harder to look down on anyone still finding their way.

For reflection

How does remembering that you were grafted in — brought near by grace rather than by birth or merit — change the way you relate to God and to people who don't yet know Him?

Pray

Pray for a fresh sense of gratitude for your place in God's story, and for the humility that comes with it.

Day 3

Paul doesn't let the grafted-in branches get comfortable in the wrong way. He pivots and says plainly: Israel's branches were broken off because of unbelief — and you stand only by faith. So do not be arrogant, but tremble. Pastor Bill landed on verse 20 with particular weight: the instruction not to be haughty is, at its core, an instruction not to let fear drive your decisions. It's a subtle connection but an important one. Israel's stumble wasn't a single catastrophic moment; it was a posture — a self-centered, fear-driven orientation that kept them turned inward rather than toward God. Arrogance and anxiety are closer cousins than they appear. Both are ultimately about self-protection. Both say: I need to secure this myself. The alternative Paul points to is not stoic resolve but faith — a posture that stays genuinely dependent on God's kindness. The warning here is not meant to frighten you; it's meant to keep you honest. You remain in the story the same way you entered it: by trust, not by achievement. That is actually freeing news. You don't have to perform your way into continued standing. You simply stay turned toward the One who holds you. Every day is another invitation to choose that direction again — not out of fear of falling, but out of love for the God who has been relentlessly kind.

For reflection

In what area of life are you most tempted to rely on your own effort or strategy rather than trusting God's kindness to hold you?

Pray

Pray for an honest look at where self-reliance has quietly replaced dependence on God, and for the courage to turn back toward Him.

Day 4

Paul calls it a mystery — and he means that in the best sense. A mystery in Paul's writing is not a puzzle without an answer; it's a truth that has now been disclosed, a plan that was always in motion but is only now being made plain. And the plan is this: Israel's partial hardening is not permanent. It is purposeful and it will end. When the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, all Israel will be saved. Whatever your view of the precise details — and faithful Christians have discussed those details for centuries — the shape of the promise is clear: God finishes what He starts. He does not revise His purposes mid-story because circumstances get complicated. He does not cancel a covenant when the people who received it fail. That is the word Pastor Bill kept returning to across the whole sermon: faithfulness. Not just God's power, not just His knowledge, but His faithfulness — His commitment to do what He said He would do. If God's promises to Israel have held across exile and dispersion and every kind of historical pressure, then His promises to you are not fragile either. You can bring the thing you are most uncertain about — the relationship, the health situation, the unanswered question — and set it against the backdrop of a God whose track record is unblemished. He has never once failed to keep His word.

For reflection

What promise from God are you currently finding hardest to hold onto, and what does Israel's story tell you about God's commitment to that promise?

Pray

Pray for the faith to trust God's timeline, especially in the places where His promises feel delayed or uncertain.

Day 5

Verses 28 through 32 bring together two things that feel like opposites: disobedience and mercy. Paul traces the movement carefully — Gentiles were once disobedient, then received mercy; Israel has now stumbled in disobedience so that through the mercy shown to the Gentiles, they too may receive mercy. The logic spirals inward toward a single point: God has consigned all to disobedience so that He may have mercy on all. That is not a comfortable sentence for anyone who prefers to think of themselves as the ones who got it right. It puts every person — Jew and Gentile, religious and irreligious, long-time churchgoer and first-time visitor — in the same position before God. No one arrives at mercy through a track record clean enough to earn it. We all arrive the same way: through the door of our own need and God's willingness to meet it. Pastor Bill's broader argument in the sermon is that God's faithfulness to Israel is the greatest proof that His promises hold. This passage adds a personal dimension to that argument. It means the mercy that has reached you is the same mercy that is reaching others — the coworker, the estranged family member, the person whose politics frustrate you. There is no tier system. There is only mercy, offered wide.

For reflection

How does seeing yourself as equally in need of mercy — alongside every other person — change the way you pray for or interact with someone you find difficult?

Pray

Pray for someone specific who is far from God right now, asking for them to encounter the same mercy that found you.

Day 6

After three chapters of dense argument — tracing God's purposes through Israel's history, the grafting of the Gentiles, and the promise of ultimate restoration — Paul does not land on a conclusion. He lands on a doxology. How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways! He doesn't wrap it up neatly. He erupts into praise. Pastor Bill called this the connecting dot between information and transformation: adoration. You can accumulate correct theology and still live as if God isn't trustworthy. The gap between knowing truth and living from it doesn't close through more information. It closes through worship — through turning what you know about God into an active response of praise. Verse 36 gives the three-part frame Pastor Bill returned to throughout the sermon: from Him, through Him, and to Him are all things. God is the source of everything that exists. He is the sustainer — the one through whom all things continue. And He is the significance — the one for whom everything exists and toward whom everything is moving. If that is true, then no circumstance, no headline, no frightening season has the final word. The God who is the source and sustainer and significance of all things holds your story inside a larger one that is going exactly where He said it would go. The right response isn't analysis. It's worship.

For reflection

What is one truth about God from this week's readings that you haven't yet turned into active praise — and what would it look like to do that today?

Pray

Pray for a heart that moves naturally from knowing God's truth to adoring Him for it, especially when circumstances make worship feel hard.

Day 7

Looking back across the whole chapter, a single thread runs through every argument Paul makes: God can be trusted. Not trusted in a vague, sentimental way — but trusted with the specific, costly, complicated parts of life. He was trusted to preserve a remnant when Israel seemed lost. He was trusted to open a door to the nations when the natural branches stumbled. He will be trusted to fulfill every promise He made, down to the last one. Pastor Bill closed the sermon with an image that is hard to forget: believers in a Ukrainian bomb shelter, in the middle of a war, lifting their heads and singing. Not because circumstances were good. Not because fear was absent. But because the God who is the source, sustainer, and significance of all things was still on His throne — and they knew it in their bodies, not just their heads. That is where the devotional ends: not with a checklist, but with an invitation. Take communion as an act of deliberate remembrance. Sing with your community, even when self-consciousness tries to keep you quiet. Pray for a hurting world instead of spiraling over it. These aren't performances. They are the ordinary, embodied ways we close the gap between information and adoration — and stay people who trust God when trust is hard.

For reflection

What is one specific, practical step you can take this week to move from knowing God is faithful to actually living as if He is?

Pray

Pray for the courage to worship openly, to remember God's faithfulness in community, and to bring a hurting world before the God who holds it all.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Paul opens Romans 11 with a sharp question — 'Has God rejected His people?' — and then spends the rest of the chapter proving the answer is an emphatic no. Take a moment to think about a time you've watched something that looked like failure turn out to be something else entirely.

Discussion questions

1
In Romans 11:1-10, Paul points to a faithful remnant as evidence that God has never abandoned Israel — even in her darkest seasons. What does the idea of a preserved remnant tell us about how God tends to work when circumstances look like a total loss?
2
Romans 11:17-24 uses the image of branches being grafted into an olive tree. What does that picture suggest about how Gentiles relate to the promises God made to Israel — and what does it warn against?
3
In Romans 11:20-21, Paul connects a 'fearful' posture — one that leads to pride and self-reliance — with what tripped Israel up. Pastor Bill argued that fear-driven decision-making is the opposite of trusting God's faithfulness. What's the difference between those two ways of moving through hard or frightening circumstances?
4
Romans 11:36 declares that everything exists 'from Him, through Him, and to Him.' Pastor Bill described God as the source, sustainer, and significance of all things. How does sitting with that claim — really believing it — change the way people tend to interpret what's happening in the world around them?
5
Pastor Bill pointed to a group of Ukrainian believers worshipping in a bomb shelter as a picture of adoration that refuses to be swallowed by fear. He also called out singing together, taking communion, and praying for the world as specific practices that close the gap between knowing truth about God and actually living it out. What makes those kinds of communal habits different from just mentally agreeing with good theology?
6
Romans 11 ends with Paul breaking into doxology — praise — rather than a to-do list. How might a community of people who regularly move from information about God to adoration of God look different from one that stays mostly in the 'information' lane?

Pray together

Gratitude for God's faithfulness to every promise — and an honest ask for the courage to trust Him when circumstances feel frightening
