Big Idea

Quoting the message: Trust is when our ways match our words, end quote. — and the only 100% trustworthy One is God, whose Word became flesh in Jesus.

God is completely trustworthy because His words and His ways are the same thing — Jesus, the Word made flesh. When we learn to trust Him first, even under pressure and stress, we find the model for building real, anchored trust in our deepest human relationships.

Key points

1
1Trust is when our ways match our words
Pastor Bill defines trust from both the dictionary and the biblical languages: a bold, confident security combined with action based on that security. Someone is trustworthy when what they say lines up consistently with how they actually live.
2
2God is the most trustworthy because His Word became flesh
Because Jesus is the Word incarnate, God's words always match His ways — His word is His way. Pastor Bill turns to Psalm 119, the longest psalm, laid out from the Hebrew alphabet's first letter to last, to show God's Word is trustworthy from beginning to end.
3
3Our deepest relationships should be built with people who are also trusting God's word
Working through Psalm 119:113-120, Pastor Bill shows the psalmist rejecting double-minded people who say one thing and do another, choosing instead people who genuinely want to obey God. He warns against seeking allies who affirm what we already want instead of friends who lovingly challenge us with truth.
4
4David and Jonathan show what trust anchored in God looks like
Using 1 Samuel 18-19, Pastor Bill shows Jonathan giving David his robe, sword, and bow as a symbolic act of trusting God's plan over his own claim to the throne. Love is the context, commitment is the promise, but trust is the anchor — and Jonathan's trust in God let him check his ego and be there for David even at cost to himself.
5
5Saul shows what happens when we refuse to trust God
Saul benefited from David's trustworthiness until David's success threatened his pride, and because he wouldn't trust God's plan, jealousy curdled into attempts to kill David. Jonathan risked his own life warning David, appealing to his father's own history with God's faithfulness, but Saul's ways never matched his words for long.
6
6Rebuilding broken trust takes boundaries, sacrifice, consistency, and faith
Pastor Bill lays out four practical steps for repairing broken trust in relationships such as marriage, using pornography recovery as an example: forgiveness is not the same as trust, boundaries must be honored with real sacrifice (often to one's pride), the trust-breaker must show consistency over time, and the trust-builder eventually has to step out in faith to trust again.
7
7The cross is the proof God is trustworthy
Pastor Bill points to John 3:16 and the Lord's Supper, showing that God gave everything through Jesus while we could give nothing in return, and that every sin traces back to Adam and Eve being tricked into not trusting God. Looking to the cross is the reason we can trust Him with our money, time, relationships, and every area of life.

Application

Pastor Bill's charge is to stop looking down and getting soap in your eyes, and instead look up and let God's love wash you clean.

Trust God first, especially under pressure
Let your words of trust in God actually be followed by your ways this week, especially in the areas — like money — where pressure tempts you to stay in control yourself.
Choose your inner circle carefully
Build your deepest, trust-anchored friendships with people who are also pursuing Jesus and will lovingly challenge you with truth rather than just agree with what you already want to do.
Set real boundaries if trust has been broken
If someone has broken your trust repeatedly, forgive them, but don't confuse forgiveness with automatic reconciliation — require honored boundaries and real sacrifice before rebuilding closeness.
Be consistent if you're the one who broke trust
Get help (counseling, recovery groups, accountability software), and understand that rebuilding what you broke takes sustained consistency over time, not a quick apology.
Look to the cross and respond to Jesus
If you've never trusted Christ, turn from being king of your own life and put your faith in what He did on the cross; if you know Him, bring the Holy Spirit the places your words and ways don't match.

Day 1

Pastor Bill opened with a simple but striking idea: trust is both a noun and a verb. It isn't only a feeling you carry around — it's something you live out. The quiet confidence you're looking for doesn't arrive before the action; in many ways, it arrives because of it. Psalm 119:113-114 gives us a picture of what that looks like from the inside: 'I hate those with divided loyalties, but I love your instructions. You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope.' The psalmist isn't describing a person who occasionally glances at God's Word for reassurance. He's describing someone whose whole orientation — what he hates, what he loves, where he runs — is shaped by it. That's trust as a verb. It's worth sitting with the honest question Pastor Bill raised: where do your words say 'I trust God' while your daily rhythms tell a different story? Not as a verdict — just as an honest starting place. The invitation here isn't guilt; it's clarity. Because once you can see where the gap is, you can begin to close it, one small act of lived-out trust at a time.

For reflection

Where in your daily life do you notice the biggest gap between saying you trust God and actually living like you do?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see the gap between your words and your ways — and for the courage to close it.

Day 2

Psalm 119 sits at the literal center of the Bible, and Pastor Bill made the case that it's no accident. From the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet to the last, the psalmist makes one sweeping declaration: God's Word can be trusted completely. Verse 119 lands that point with real force: 'You skim off the wicked of the earth like scum; no wonder I love to obey your laws!' That's not the language of obligation — it's the language of someone who has seen what happens when God's standard holds and when it doesn't, and who has chosen, clearly and deliberately, which side they want to be on. Pastor Bill's challenge was plain: let Psalm 119 become your daily anchor, not just something you reach for when life gets hard. An anchor doesn't only matter in a storm — it matters because it keeps you from drifting in the quiet moments too. Spending regular time in God's Word isn't a spiritual performance; it's how you stay tethered to the One whose ways and words are always the same. That consistency in Him is what slowly shapes consistency in you.

For reflection

What does your current relationship with God's Word actually look like day to day — and what would it look like to make it more of an anchor than an emergency resource?

Pray

Pray for a genuine hunger for God's Word — not as a discipline to check off, but as a daily source of stability.

Day 3

The friendship between David and Jonathan is one of the most remarkable in all of Scripture, and Pastor Bill pointed to one moment in particular that shows why: Jonathan took off his robe and his sword and gave them to David. If you know the story, you know what that meant. Jonathan was the crown prince. That robe and that sword weren't just personal belongings — they represented the throne. In handing them over, Jonathan was saying, 'I see what God is doing, and I'm going to trust His plan even when it costs me mine.' That kind of friendship doesn't happen by accident. It's built between people who are both genuinely heading in God's direction, both willing to check their ego against His purposes. Pastor Bill's point was this: your closest relationships should be with people who also want to trust God. Not because everyone else is off-limits, but because when two people are both looking up toward the same God, they naturally grow closer to each other. Real trust in a friendship, just like real trust in God, costs something. It requires you to lay something down.

For reflection

Are your closest friendships with people who are genuinely heading in God's direction? What does that look like in practice for you?

Pray

Pray for discernment about the friendships you're investing in most deeply — and for the humility to lay your ego down where God is asking you to.

Day 4

Saul is one of the most sobering figures in the Old Testament, and Pastor Bill didn't shy away from why. Saul said he trusted God. He was, at least at the start, the anointed king. But he kept refusing to accept what God was actually doing. The result, as Pastor Bill described it, was double-mindedness — saying one thing, living another — and it made him unstable, jealous, and ultimately someone no one could rely on. First Samuel 19:1-6 shows Jonathan stepping into the middle of that instability, interceding for David, appealing to his own father's conscience. It's a picture of what someone anchored in trust looks like when they're surrounded by someone who isn't. The contrast is striking and worth sitting with. Because the truth Pastor Bill drew out is this: when our words and our ways don't match — when we perform trust without actually living it — the people closest to us feel it. It erodes relationship. And it starts, often quietly, with our relationship with God. The good news is that Saul's story doesn't have to be yours. Noticing the double-mindedness is the first step toward something better.

For reflection

Is there an area of your life where you're performing trust in God outwardly while inwardly resisting what He's doing?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to align your inner life with what you say you believe — and for freedom from the fear that makes double-mindedness feel safer.

Day 5

Rebuilding trust after it's been broken is hard work. Pastor Bill laid out four honest requirements: establishing real boundaries, making real sacrifices (usually of pride), demonstrating consistency over time, and eventually stepping back out in faith. None of those things happen overnight, and none of them are painless. Psalm 119:143 feels like the right companion for a day focused on that kind of hard, slow work: 'As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands.' The psalmist isn't describing a life without difficulty — he's describing a person who has found something solid enough to hold onto when everything else is pressing in. That's what the rebuilding process requires. It requires a foundation that doesn't move just because the relationship is still fragile or the other person hasn't come around yet. If you're in the middle of repairing something broken right now, today's invitation isn't to fix it all at once. It's to keep your footing — to stay anchored to God's Word and His ways even when the outcome is uncertain. Consistency, Pastor Bill said, is one of the things that rebuilds trust. Start there.

For reflection

If you're in the process of rebuilding trust somewhere — or being asked to extend it — which of the four steps (boundaries, sacrifice, consistency, faith) feels most challenging right now?

Pray

Pray for steadiness in a relationship where trust is being rebuilt — and for the humility to do your part without demanding the other person move faster than they're ready to.

Day 6

Everything Pastor Bill said about trust — that it's costly, that it requires sacrifice, that it means your words and your ways have to match — finds its ultimate expression in one place: the cross. John 3:16 is so familiar it can lose its force, but sit with it today: 'For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.' Pastor Bill was direct about this. God gave everything — His only Son — for people who had nothing to offer in return. That is trust proven. That is God's words and God's ways being perfectly one. It's also the reason — and the power — to trust Him back. Not because you've earned the right to a good outcome, but because the God who gave that much for you is not going to abandon you now. Whatever you're being asked to trust Him with — your money, your relationships, your habits, your future — the cross is the evidence that He means what He says. You're not stepping out toward an unknown. You're stepping toward Someone who has already proven His word.

For reflection

When you look at the cross, what is the hardest area of your life to actually trust God with — and what does the cross say about that area?

Pray

Pray for the grace to let the cross be enough evidence — to trust God with the specific thing you've been holding back.

Day 7

Looking back over this week, the thread running through every day is the same one Pastor Bill traced through the whole sermon: God is the only perfectly trustworthy One because His Word and His ways are completely one. And because of that — because of what He proved at the cross — we are invited, and even empowered, to become people whose ways match our words too. That's the whole-life vision Pastor Bill painted: Psalm 119 as your daily anchor, your closest friendships built with people heading in God's direction, and the courage to do the slow, ego-checking work of repairing what's broken — all of it flowing from a deep, clear-eyed confidence in a God who gave everything first. That kind of trust doesn't arrive fully formed. It's built — through time in God's Word, through honest self-examination, through relationships that keep pointing you back to Jesus, through small daily choices that close the gap between what you say and how you live. You don't have to have it all together today. But you can look up — toward the cross, toward the Word — and take the next step from there. That's what trust, as a verb, looks like.

For reflection

Looking at the whole week, what is one concrete change — in your time, your relationships, your habits, or your heart — that you want to carry forward from what Pastor Bill preached?

Pray

Pray for the Holy Spirit to make what you've heard this week real in how you actually live — starting today, not someday.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message explored what it really looks like when our words and our ways actually line up — and who in history has ever pulled that off perfectly.

Discussion questions

1
Pastor Bill described trust as both a noun and a verb — a bold confidence that has to express itself in action. Looking at that idea, what do you think is the connection between the feeling of trust and actually seeing it lived out?
2
Psalm 119:113-119 holds God's Word up as a completely reliable anchor — not just a resource for hard moments, but the center of a whole life. What does the psalmist seem to understand about God's Word that makes that kind of total reliance feel reasonable rather than reckless?
3
In 1 Samuel 18:1-4, Jonathan hands David his robe and sword — symbolically giving up his own claim to the throne. What does that gesture suggest about what real trust costs, and how ego and God's plan tend to run into each other?
4
By contrast, 1 Samuel 19:1-6 shows Saul saying one thing and doing another — affirming David and then turning on him again. Pastor Bill connected that double-mindedness to Saul becoming unstable and jealous over time. What does that pattern reveal about what happens to a person when their words and ways keep pulling in opposite directions?
5
Pastor Bill outlined four things that rebuilding broken trust usually requires: setting real boundaries, making sacrifices (often of pride), staying consistent over time, and eventually stepping back into faith. Which of those four do you think people most often skip, and why might that one feel the hardest?
6
Pastor Bill pointed to John 3:16 and said God proved Himself trustworthy by giving everything for people who had nothing to offer. How might that picture of the cross shape the way a community of people tries to trust one another — and tries to become trustworthy themselves?

Pray together

Ask God to close the gap between our words and our ways — and thank Him that He already closed it perfectly for us.
