Big Idea

Quoting the message: Do not give up — gear up, end quote. in the armor God gives us, because we're in a spiritual war.

Following Jesus isn't a passive add-on to life — it's a battle with a real enemy who wants to confuse us, wound us, and make us give up. But God has already given us armor to fight and stand firm: truth, righteousness, and the peace of the gospel, so that instead of sitting out the fight miserable, we can live in the victory Jesus has already won.

Key points

1
1We are in a real spiritual battle, and we have a part to play even though salvation is a gift we cannot earn.
Pastor Hunter walks through Ephesians 6:13, noting that while the enemy cannot take away a believer's salvation, he can work to disconnect them from feeling God's love, joy, and peace. Paul writes this charge to gear up while under Roman house arrest, comparing the Christian life to a soldier dressed for conflict every day.
2
2The belt of truth is foundational because the enemy's primary tactic is lying and deception.
Pastor Hunter explains that a Roman belt let soldiers move freely and held the rest of the armor together, just as truth holds a believer together in battle. He traces the enemy's lying back to Eden with Adam and Eve, into Jesus' words to the Pharisees in John 8:44, and into the whispered lies of worthlessness many of us believe today.
3
3To wrap ourselves in truth, we need to be in places committed to speaking it — worship, community, and God's word.
He points to singing worship songs as proclaiming truth rather than just warming up for the sermon, getting into a small group to have lies spoken over with truth, and reading God's word since Jesus calls Himself the way, the truth, and the life in John 8:31-32.
4
4The body armor of righteousness protects our heart, and living without it leaves us wounded rather than judged.
Pastor Hunter distinguishes positional righteousness, given the moment we say yes to Jesus, from practical righteousness, the lifelong practice of fighting sin. He tells a personal story of being hit in the forehead with a golf club as a child, and how his father's heartbreak rather than blame mirrors God's response when we're wounded by sin we ran into unprotected.
5
5The shoes of peace let us stand firm because the gospel is genuinely good news and victory.
He unpacks the word translated good news as literally the word for gospel, describing Roman soldiers' nailed sandals that let them dig in and hold ground. He shares a little league memory of an opposing coach fearing his batting to illustrate that the enemy is afraid of what a Christ follower's confidence in the gospel can do.
6
6Standing in the peace of the gospel means being willing to actually talk about it and invite people to Jesus.
Pastor Hunter contrasts how freely people share about diets or essential oils with how anxious they get discussing faith, naming this discomfort as another enemy tactic. He references Jesus' teaching in Matthew about a coming separation of all people and pictures the grief of loved ones asking why we never told them.

Application

Gear up, don't give up — figure out which piece of armor you've left on the ground and put it on this week.

Wrap yourself in truth
Get honest about where you're believing a comfortable lie instead of God's truth, and put yourself in places built to speak truth over you — worship, a small group, and time in God's word.
Put on your righteousness
Name the sin or addiction you've decided is too heavy to fight, and start fighting it, trusting that God isn't angry at your wounds but wants to heal them.
Stand in the peace of the gospel
Let the victory you have in Jesus settle your anxiety about talking about your faith, and stop staying quiet out of fear of what people will think.
Invite someone before Easter
With Easter three weeks away, identify a friend, neighbor, coworker, or family member to personally invite, since most people will come if simply asked.

7-day devotional

Day 1

There is a moment in any hard season when the temptation shifts from fighting to just enduring — and then from enduring to quietly giving up. Paul writes to believers who knew that feeling. He doesn't shame them for it. He simply says: put on the full armor of God, so that when the evil day comes, you will still be standing firm. That phrase — 'when the evil day comes' — is honest in a way we sometimes aren't with ourselves. Hard days are not a sign that God has abandoned you. They are a sign that you are in a real battle, one that every Christian is already in whether they feel ready or not. Pastor Hunter's point this week is not that you need to try harder or be stronger. It's that the armor has already been given. The question Paul is pressing — and the question worth sitting with today — is whether you are actually putting it on. Standing firm is not passive. It is a daily, deliberate act of trust. You gear up not because you are impressive enough to win, but because the One who won has outfitted you for the fight. You don't have to figure out how to survive today. You have to choose to suit up.

For reflection

Where in your life right now does it feel more like you are enduring than actively standing — and what might it look like to choose to gear up in that area today?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to stop drifting and start deliberately putting on what God has already given you for today's battle.

Day 2

Jesus doesn't soften this: the enemy is a liar, and lying is his native language. There is no truth in him. That's not dramatic language for dramatic effect — it is a precise description of the tactic you are up against every single day. The lies rarely sound like lies. They sound like your own voice. They sound like a reasonable conclusion drawn from real pain. You're too far gone. God is disappointed in you. This is just who you are now. None of those sentences carry the enemy's signature, and yet every one of them comes from the same source Jesus is describing in John 8. Pastor Hunter made the case that the belt of truth is the foundational piece of armor precisely because everything else depends on it. If the lies go unchallenged long enough, they start to feel like reality. And once deception shapes how you see yourself and how you see God, every other piece of armor becomes harder to reach for. The good news is that Jesus, in the same passage, calls Himself the one who tells the truth — and says that truth is what sets people free. Freedom from the enemy's lies begins with recognizing them for what they are: not your voice, not God's voice, and not the final word.

For reflection

What is one lie about yourself or about God that you have been hearing on repeat lately — and what does Jesus actually say in response to it?

Pray

Pray for discernment to recognize the enemy's voice and for the courage to hold it up against what is actually true.

Day 3

Jesus draws a quiet but important line here. He doesn't say that knowing a fact about truth sets you free — He says that remaining in His word does. The word He uses implies continuity, staying, making a home there. Truth is not just a concept to agree with; it's a place to live. This is why Pastor Hunter's application for the belt of truth was so practical: get back into places that are committed to speaking truth. Worship. Community. The Word itself. Not because checking those boxes earns you something, but because the enemy's lies thrive in isolation and silence. When you are only hearing your own thoughts — or the world's narrative — on repeat, the lies have no competition. When you stay in the Word, when you show up where truth is being spoken over you, the belt starts to hold. It does not have to be impressive. It does not have to be a two-hour Bible study every morning. It can be opening a passage before you pick up your phone. It can be walking into a small group even when you feel like you have nothing to offer. Staying in the truth is less about discipline as performance and more about simply refusing to go long without hearing what is actually real.

For reflection

What is one honest step you could take this week to put yourself in a place where truth is being spoken — and what has been keeping you from it?

Pray

Pray for a genuine hunger for the Word and for God to open a door back into community where truth is spoken and lived.

Day 4

The body armor of righteousness covers the chest — which in the ancient world meant the heart, the seat of everything that matters. That placement is intentional. Pastor Hunter drew out two layers of this piece: the righteousness that is given to you at salvation — the standing before God you have because of what Jesus did, not what you've done — and the righteousness that is lived out in your daily choices. Both matter. The first is a gift you cannot earn and cannot lose. The second is a fight you enter every morning. When those two layers are working together, your heart is protected. When you treat holy living as optional or as a burden you've outgrown, you are not just bending a rule — you are taking off armor in the middle of a battle. And the wounds that follow are real: shame, anxiety, a growing distance from God that you can't quite name. Pastor Hunter was careful here, and it's worth being careful here too: this is not God punishing you. It's what happens when you are unprotected and the enemy has room to work. The call is not condemnation. It is an invitation to put the armor back on — to name what needs to be named and trust that God is not angry at you. He is grieved because He sees you wounded.

For reflection

Is there a habit, a compromise, or a pattern in your life right now that you have been excusing rather than fighting — and what would it look like to honestly name it before God today?

Pray

Pray for the honesty to name what needs to be named and for the trust that God's response is not anger but a desire to see you whole.

Day 5

Shoes seem like a small thing until you're standing on uneven ground. In Roman military life, the right footwear was the difference between a soldier who could hold his position and one who slipped and fell. Paul reaches for that image when he describes the shoes of peace — readiness rooted in the gospel of peace. The gospel is not just the message you believed once. It is the ground you stand on every day. Jesus has already won over sin and death. That victory is not pending; it is finished. And when that reality is what you are standing on, the enemy cannot knock you over with fear, guilt, or the whisper that your past disqualifies you from being used. Pastor Hunter described these shoes as giving believers both firm footing and confidence — not confidence in yourself, but confidence in what you carry. The gospel you hold is not a fragile thing. It does not depend on how well you explain it or how perfectly you have lived. It is the power of God for anyone who hears it. Putting on your shoes means living from that reality rather than apologizing for it — standing where you are, planted, and ready.

For reflection

What would it look like for you to live this week as if the gospel you carry is genuinely powerful — not something to be embarrassed about, but something worth standing on?

Pray

Pray for a fresh confidence in the gospel — not in your ability to share it, but in the truth and power of what Jesus has already done.

Day 6

Related passage

Paul quotes Isaiah here with unmistakable joy: how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. The shoes of peace are not just defensive — they move. They carry you somewhere. Pastor Hunter closed the section on these shoes with a very concrete challenge: lace them up and invite someone. Not because you have to manufacture a spiritual conversation or have all the answers, but because you are already standing on the victory of Jesus, and the people around you need to hear about it. The enemy, as Pastor Hunter put it, fears the victory you carry. An invitation to church — especially as Easter approaches — is not a sales pitch. It's a simple act of saying, there is something here that matters, and I want you to experience it. That is what beautiful feet do. They close the distance between someone who hasn't heard and the good news that changes everything. You don't need a script. You need a name — one person who comes to mind when you ask yourself who in my life needs an invitation right now. The shoes are already on. The question is whether you are willing to walk toward someone.

For reflection

Who is one person in your life who needs an invitation — to church, to a conversation, to something that points toward Jesus — and what is one real step you could take this week to extend it?

Pray

Pray for a specific person by name, and ask God for the courage and the right moment to take one step toward them.

Day 7

Reading the passage as a whole at the end of the week does something that studying it in pieces can't quite do — it lets you feel the weight and the grace of it together. Paul is not writing a checklist. He is writing to people in a real fight, telling them that the God they serve has not sent them out unequipped. The belt, the body armor, the shoes — each one addresses a specific place where the enemy tries to break you: your sense of what is true, your moral footing, your willingness to carry the gospel forward. What's striking is that none of these pieces are things you manufacture. They are given. Your job is to put them on. That is the whole of Pastor Hunter's call this week: where do you need to gear up? Some of us need to get back into truth. Some of us need to name a wound and fight it instead of live with it. Some of us need to stop standing still and start walking toward someone. All of it comes back to the same act — choosing, deliberately and daily, to put on what God has already provided. The armor is yours. The battle is real. And the One who outfitted you has already won.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, which piece of armor — truth, righteousness, or peace — do you most need to focus on putting on right now, and what is one concrete decision that represents doing that?

Pray

Pray through each piece of armor honestly — asking God to show you where you are geared up, where you are not, and what your next step looks like.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Paul tells believers in Ephesians 6 to 'put on every piece of God's armor' — not as a one-time event, but as a daily, deliberate choice. This message from Pastor Hunter walks us through the first three pieces and asks a simple question: are we actually wearing them?

Discussion questions

1
In Ephesians 6:13, Paul tells believers to 'put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil.' What does the image of putting on armor suggest about how Paul expects Christians to approach the spiritual battle they're already in?
2
In John 8:44, Jesus describes the devil as 'the father of lies.' Pastor Hunter argued that the belt of truth is foundational because the enemy's primary tactic is deception — about who we are and who God is. What kinds of lies do you think people around us tend to absorb most easily, and how does staying in truth push back against that?
3
Pastor Hunter described the body armor of righteousness as having two sides — the righteousness we receive at salvation and the practical righteousness we live out each day. How do those two dimensions work together to protect someone, and what happens when one is separated from the other?
4
Pastor Hunter said that when believers set aside God's call to holy living, the resulting shame, depression, and anxiety aren't divine punishment — they're enemy attacks on an unguarded heart. How does that framing change the way we might think about or come alongside someone who's struggling in that place?
5
Ephesians 6:15 ties the shoes of peace directly to 'the Good News of peace with God.' What does it mean that the gospel — Jesus' victory over sin and death — is described as footing or firm ground? How might that shape the confidence with which people share their faith?
6
Pastor Hunter closed with the question: where do you need to gear up? He pointed to three on-ramps — getting back into truth through community or God's Word, honestly naming and fighting a compromising habit, and lacing up the shoes of peace with bold everyday intentionality. As a group, what makes it hard for people in general to take that first step toward whichever piece of armor they're missing?

Pray together

Ask God for the courage and clarity to put on each piece of armor He has already provided — truth, righteousness, and peace — and to walk into the week ready rather than unguarded
