Key points
1The disciples' failed night of fishing shows that apart from Jesus, their best efforts come up empty.
Pastor Mark describes Peter and the others heading back to shore after a wasted night of fishing, having caught nothing despite being expert fishermen who knew the lake. This sets up the lesson that it's only when we reach the end of our resources that Jesus shares His.
A story from life
Preacher recalls waking before sunrise on the Sea of Galilee in Tiberias and watching fishing boats return to dock after a night of fishing.
2Jesus provides the catch to show that ministry works only in His power, not ours.
When the men obey Jesus' command to cast their nets on the other side, the catch overflows and the nets miraculously hold together. Pastor Mark explains this is John showing that Christian workers often believe they have to do it all, when really God empowers the work and receives glory through us rather than needing us.
3The charcoal fire ties Peter's denial to his restoration, showing Jesus meeting him at the very place of his failure.
Pastor Mark connects the charcoal fire on the beach back to the charcoal fire in Annas's courtyard where Peter denied Jesus three times. This time, Jesus uses the same prop to first meet Peter's physical needs with breakfast before addressing his heart.
it's only when we reach the end of our resources is when Jesus shares his
4Jesus publicly restores Peter to service after he had publicly denied Him.
Because Peter's denial happened in public, Pastor Mark notes that his restoration also had to happen publicly. On the beach, the fisherman becomes a shepherd again as Jesus revisits Peter's love for Him three times.
5Jesus calls Peter to a lifetime of following Him, even predicting the manner of his death.
Pastor Mark walks through Jesus contrasting the beginning and end of Peter's ministry, foretelling his death by crucifixion, and repeating the same command He gave three years earlier: follow me. He notes the Greek command means to perpetually keep following, a lifelong walk, not a one-time step.
the more that we get to do for God, the more we are actually indebted to him
6Jesus tells Peter to stay focused on his own calling rather than comparing it to John's.
When Peter asks about John's future, Jesus tells him essentially to mind his own business and stay focused on his own race. Pastor Mark applies this to believers who envy or wish for someone else's calling instead of accepting the unique plan God has for them.
7Both Peter and John were used mightily by God, each in their own distinct calling.
Pastor Mark traces Peter's role preaching at Pentecost, his imprisonments, his authorship behind Mark's Gospel and his own epistles, and his death by crucifixion. He contrasts this with John, the only apostle not martyred, who was exiled to Patmos and wrote three epistles and Revelation, showing that God staked out a unique race for each of them.
part of the obedience to Jesus is accepting the plan that He has for us
Application
Pastor Mark's closing charge is that knowing more about Jesus isn't enough — it has to be put into practice.
Keep meeting together over the summer
Groups are encouraged to meet as frequently as possible even with lower summer attendance, trusting Jesus' promise that where two or three gather in His name, He is present.
Accept your own race, don't envy someone else's
Like Peter being told to mind his own business about John's future, believers should stay focused on the unique calling God has given them rather than wishing for someone else's.
Put what you've learned into practice
Pastor Mark prays that knowing more about Jesus from studying John would move into actually doing what He's told us, since it's the Holy Spirit working through us toward others that brings real joy and purpose.
Keep reaching out to those far from God
He prays that the church would not grow tired of reaching neighbors and friends who need God's heart and salvation.
