Galatians | Week 4 | Bill Bush | Full Service

Day 1

Freedom is a word that gets thrown around a lot, but Paul uses it with real weight. 'It is for freedom that Christ has set us free,' he writes — and then immediately warns us not to let that freedom slip away by picking up a yoke of slavery again. That yoke can look like a lot of things. It might be a rigid set of rules you use to manage God's opinion of you. It might be the quiet exhaustion of trying to be good enough, holy enough, disciplined enough. The sermon named this the 'combat boot' — lacing up tighter and harder, convinced that if you just try harder, you'll finally feel free. But Paul is clear: that yoke is not freedom. It is slavery dressed up as spirituality. Here's what's worth sitting with today: both the drive to earn God's approval and the drive to escape His expectations come from the same root — fear. Fear that love has conditions. Fear that you'll be found out. Real freedom, the kind Christ actually purchased, doesn't begin with more effort. It begins with trusting that the work has already been done. That's not permission to coast. It's an invitation to exhale and start from a completely different place — grace.

For reflection

Where in your life are you carrying a 'yoke' right now — trying to earn something from God or from others that He may already be offering freely?

Pray

Pray for honesty about where fear, not faith, may be driving your spiritual effort today.

Day 2

Paul's instruction here sounds almost too simple: 'Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.' Not 'fight harder against the flesh.' Not 'white-knuckle your way through temptation.' Walk. The image is steady, directional movement — one step at a time, in step with Someone who already knows the way. The sermon described this as the 'hiking boot' path, and that metaphor carries real wisdom. Hiking isn't sprinting, and it isn't wandering. It's purposeful movement through terrain that is sometimes beautiful and sometimes difficult, guided by someone you trust. The alternative — what the sermon called the 'running shoe' — is self-directed license. It looks like freedom because it has no rules, but it's really just running from something: from guilt, from God, from the weight of being known. Both the combat boot and the running shoe are exhausting because both put you at the center. Walking by the Spirit means yielding the center. It means checking in — genuinely, not ritually — with the Holy Spirit throughout your day. What does He seem to be saying? Where does He seem to be leading? That kind of attentiveness is a practice, and practices take time. But it starts with a single, honest step.

For reflection

What would it look like practically for you to 'check in' with the Holy Spirit at one or two specific moments in your day this week?

Pray

Pray for a posture of attentiveness — an ear tuned to the Spirit's lead rather than your own instincts today.

Day 3

Paul makes a striking statement in this verse: what matters is 'faith expressing itself through love.' Not just faith. Not just behavior. Faith that produces love as its natural output. The sermon pointed to this as the very heart of the gospel — and it's worth slowing down here, because it reframes everything. If love is the expression of real faith, then the question is never just 'am I following the rules?' or 'am I doing what makes me happy?' The question is: is my faith actually producing love? Love for God, love for the people around me, love for those who are hard to love? The sermon also said something quietly powerful: love decommissions fear. That's worth holding onto. Fear keeps us in control mode — either controlling our righteousness or controlling our comfort. But when we genuinely experience the love of Christ, the grip of fear loosens. We don't need to manage outcomes as desperately. We don't need to perform or escape. Love — received deeply and given freely — is what actually makes the combat boot and the running shoe unnecessary. Today, you might ask yourself where love feels thin in your life, and whether fear might be the reason. That's not a guilt question. It's a doorway.

For reflection

Is there a relationship or a situation in your life where fear is crowding out love right now? What might it look like to let faith express itself there?

Pray

Pray for a fresh experience of Christ's love in a specific relationship or area of life where fear has taken up residence.

Day 4

These verses carry a sobering diagnosis: those who try to be justified by law have 'fallen away from grace.' Paul isn't talking about losing salvation through a single misstep — he's describing a posture, a whole orientation of the heart that has turned away from grace as its source and returned to self-effort as its engine. And then he pivots: 'But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised us.' By faith. Not by effort. The sermon made a point here that is both humbling and freeing: when we honestly reckon with the depth of our own sin — not as condemnation, but as honesty — we begin to grasp just how wide and extravagant God's love actually is. Shallow self-awareness produces shallow gratitude. But when you stop minimizing what you've actually needed to be rescued from, the love that rescues you becomes extraordinary. This is not an invitation to wallow in guilt. It's an invitation to let the full weight of grace land. The person who knows they were forgiven much, loves much. Today, let honesty about your need for grace become a doorway to deeper wonder at what you've actually received.

For reflection

What would honest, non-condemning self-awareness about your own sin open up in your understanding of God's love for you?

Pray

Pray for the courage to be honest with God about your need — and the faith to receive His grace without deflecting it.

Day 5

The parable of the prodigal son is familiar, but the sermon drew out something easy to miss: both sons were lost. The younger son ran toward license — taking everything and burning it on his own desires. The older son stayed home and ran toward legalism — performing faithfully but from a spirit of resentment and entitlement, not love. Neither had a genuine relationship with the father. They both related to him through transaction: one through rebellion, one through obligation. The father in the story is the one worth watching most closely. He sees the younger son while he is still 'a long way off.' He runs. He throws a party. He doesn't lecture. And when the older son fumes outside, the father goes out to him too — gently, without anger. This father is not managing a system. He is in love with his children and cannot stay distant from them. The sermon connected this to the Lord's Table — a regular returning home. Not a performance of worthiness, but a humble re-entry into the father's embrace. Wherever you find yourself today — whether you've been running away or grinding away — the father is already moving toward you.

For reflection

Which son do you identify with more right now — the one who ran away, or the one who stayed but grew resentful? What does it look like to 'come home' from that place?

Pray

Pray for a fresh sense of the Father's welcome — that wherever you are on the path, He is already moving toward you.

Day 6

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. The sermon was honest about something we often overlook: these are not goals to achieve. They are fruit — the natural result of something alive and growing, not something manufactured through willpower. You can't squeeze fruit out of a branch. It grows when the branch stays connected to the vine. That's the whole point. The combat boot approach tries to produce these qualities by discipline and force. The running shoe approach ignores them entirely. But the hiking boot path — walking with the Spirit — simply stays connected, and the fruit follows. This doesn't mean passivity. Gardeners still tend their gardens. But tending is different from manufacturing. Tending means clearing what hinders growth, staying close to the source, being patient with the season you're in. One of the most practical questions you can ask yourself today is: which of these qualities feels most absent in my life right now? Not as a grade — as a diagnostic. Where fruit is thin, the question is usually about connection, not effort. What might staying more connected to the Spirit look like in that specific area of your life?

For reflection

Which fruit of the Spirit feels most scarce in your life right now, and what might it reveal about where connection with the Spirit needs tending?

Pray

Pray for a willingness to tend the connection — not to manufacture the fruit, but to stay close to the One who produces it.

Day 7

Looking back over this week, a single thread runs through every passage: real freedom is not something you earn or escape into — it is something you receive and walk in, day by day, in step with the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5 holds together what we often tear apart. It holds the honest diagnosis of our self-effort and our self-direction. It holds the extravagant love of a Father who runs toward us. It holds the Spirit's quiet, faithful work of producing in us what we cannot produce ourselves. The sermon's image of the hiking boot is a lasting one because it's so honest about what the journey actually feels like. It's not a sprint. It's not a march. It's a walk — sometimes uphill, sometimes through fog, always with a Guide who knows the terrain better than you do. If this week surfaced something real in you — an area of fear, a pattern of control, a longing to return home — that is not a problem. That is the Spirit at work. The invitation is always the same: stop performing, stop running, and walk. Trust the love that found you when you were still a long way off. Let that love move you outward — toward God, toward others, toward the life He has for you. Not because you have to. Because you've been found.

For reflection

As you reflect on this week, what one shift — in posture, practice, or perspective — do you most want to carry forward in walking with the Spirit?

Pray

Pray for the grace to keep walking — to return to the Father as often as you need to, and to trust the Holy Spirit with the terrain ahead.
