Key points
1Jesus's prayer in John 17 is not generic — He specifically prays for everyone who will ever believe in Him, including you by name.
Pastor Bill points to verse 20, where Jesus says He is praying not only for the disciples but for all who will ever believe through their message. Because Jesus is God, with full knowledge of past and future, He literally knew each believer's name and face when He prayed this prayer two thousand years ago, and Hebrews says He continues praying for us today.
The simple big idea we wanna talk about today is this. Jesus prays for me
Jesus knew your name before you knew your name
2Chasing worldly happiness instead of embracing Jesus's mission is why many believers miss out on joy.
Pastor Bill contrasts happiness, which depends on circumstances, with the joy and peace Jesus promised in verse 13, which transcend circumstances. He warns that treating church and prayer as a way to spiritualize the same pursuits as the world — nicer stuff, easier lives — will never produce the joy Jesus prayed over us; joy comes from embracing the mission He sends us on.
3Salvation means Jesus secured a pardon for our past.
Working through John 17:1-5, Pastor Bill explains that Jesus's 'hour' was the cross, where He gave up His glory and took on human nature permanently to purchase eternal life for us. Because God is both just and loving, sin had to be judged, but Jesus's death satisfies justice while extending mercy, giving us a pardon that frees us not just from guilt but from being trapped by our past and by what others' sin has done to us.
God the father, he's not out to get you, but he is out to get you
He came out with a plan to get you, To get you back
4Sanctification means Jesus prays for a power for our present mission, not our present wants.
From John 17:6-19, Pastor Bill shows Jesus praying for protection, unity, and holiness for the disciples He is leaving behind in the world. He stresses that the familiar phrase 'in the world but not of the world' actually runs backward in the text — Jesus says we are not of the world but are being sent into it — meaning the goal is infiltration on mission, not isolation behind circled wagons.
5Circling the wagons in isolation misses the point of being sent; unity is for mission, not uniformity.
He unpacks how treating the Christian life as self-protection turns anyone outside the circle into a target instead of someone to rescue, and applies this to church growth, serving, giving, and Easter outreach — resistance to a bigger building or more services often comes from an isolationist mindset rather than a missional one.
Jesus isn't talking about isolation. He's talking about infiltration
Anything that's not in my circle is a target
6Glorification means Jesus prays a promise over our future — being with Him face to face.
From verses 21-24, Pastor Bill highlights that Jesus prays for believers to see His glory and share unity with the Father and Son, eagerly anticipating being reunited with us rather than greeting us with judgment. This promise of a future with Jesus, alongside the pardon and the power, is where lasting joy is rooted.
7Realizing Jesus prays for us personally can transform how we trust Him, the way it did in a personal story about his grandmother.
Pastor Bill tells about growing up intimidated by his grandmother, only to learn as a young Christian that she had prayed for him every single morning since before he was born, asking that he would know Jesus's love and find joy in it. Discovering this transformed how he saw her — from feeling merely tolerated to knowing he was loved — which he uses to picture how knowing Jesus prays for us should transform our trust in Him.
A story from life
The preacher's grandmother prayed for him every morning from before he was born until he discovered it as a new Christian — reshaping his view of her love for him
Application
Pastor Bill frames the response as embracing what Jesus already prayed over us — the pardon, the power, and the promise — instead of chasing the world's version of happiness.
Let the truth of Jesus's prayer sink in
Take time, like the thirty seconds of silence in the message, to lay your current struggle next to the fact that Jesus knew your name and prayed for you before the cross and still prays for you now.
Receive the pardon for your past
Stop carrying guilt over your own sin or wounds from others' sin; embrace that Jesus's death settled the penalty and frees you to walk into healing rather than staying chained to what happened.
Embrace the mission instead of circling the wagons
Resist an isolationist, self-protective posture toward church and the world; get involved in serving, giving, and sharing your faith as part of being sent on Jesus's mission rather than staying safely uninvolved.
Support the church's mission through giving and serving
Give financially, including toward the new building, and serve at Easter services, seeing this as unity in mission together rather than an unnecessary ask.
Trust Jesus with your future because you know what you're going to
When sacrifice and serving get hard and unhappy in the moment, hold onto the promise of glorification — being face to face with Jesus — as the reason you can keep going.
Take it into your week
